Today millions of streams and wetlands across the country lost protections as Trump’s Navigable Waters Protection Rule officially went into effect. This new rule dramatically decreases the waterways protected under the Clean Water Act. Waterbodies and waterways such as wetlands, streams, and groundwater will no longer be protected from pollution.

No to Coal this Christmas: Puget Soundkeeper sends Notice of Intent to Sue to Pacific Coast Coal Company
On December 17th, 2019 Puget Soundkeeper sent a Notice of Intent to Sue Letter to Pacific Coast Coal Company (PCCC) for stormwater pollution violations at the John Henry Number 1 Coal Mine, a coal surface mining operation that has been closed since 1999. The 480 acre coal mine utilized open pit mining, and at its peak, produced 300,000 tons of coal per year.

Court Denies Trump Administration Injunction, Finally Designating Puget Sound a No Discharge Zone
The U.S. District Court in Washington, D.C., denied a move by the American Waterways Operators and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to halt the implementation of a No Discharge Zone (NDZ) for Puget Sound in Washington state. A NDZ prohibits ships and boats from discharging raw or partially treated sewage across the 2,300 square miles of marine waters as well as contiguous waters around Lake Washington and Lake Union.
A Win for Clean Water: $734,000 Settlement Reached in LRI Landfill Case
On December 10th, Puget Soundkeeper reached a legal settlement to resolve a federal Clean Water Act case filed in September 2017 against LRI Landfill, a 168 acre, privately owned non-hazardous landfill within the Nisqually River watershed.
Suquamish Tribe, Environmental Groups, and State of Washington Reach Settlement of Lawsuit Over U.S. Navy Contamination of Puget Sound
Today, the Suquamish Tribe, Puget Soundkeeper, Washington Environmental Council, and the State of Washington announced a settlement with the U.S. Navy over the hull scraping of the ex-Independence, an inactive aircraft carrier that was docked at the Navy’s naval facility in Bremerton. The settlement was filed today in Federal District Court in Tacoma.
Washington’s Polluted Stormwater Permits Still Threaten State Waterways, Endangered Orca
Washington State’s polluted stormwater permits have fallen far short of needed protections for clean water and healthy watersheds, further endangering orca and the salmon runs they need to thrive. Citing stormwater runoff from roads, rooftops, and other developed areas as the number one water quality problem in Puget Sound, clean water advocates have filed an appeal with the Pollution Control Hearings Board, demanding stronger protections for the state’s streams, rivers and bays.
